We gathered confidential and anonymous responses to our online survey in the summer of 2024. More than 1,700 Am Law 200 partners from across the county responded. Here’s what we learned from them.

Major, Lindsey & Africa (MLA) launched the 2024 In-House Counsel Compensation Survey amid an uncertain market, a shifting regulatory landscape, and in the shadow of AI’s rise to prominence. The legal talent market may have slowed slightly as organizations tighten their belts, but the need for high-quality legal talent has only increased. Current rates of compensation do not necessarily reflect that need, creating an opportunity for those companies willing to recognize the value of premier legal talent.

Gen-Z lawyers are getting their first taste of Big Law life. What impressions have these first few years as associates left on them, and how have those experiences impacted their future?

Trying to define law firm culture can be challenging. Too often, the result is a vague description like “collegial” or “stuffy.” Major, Lindsey & Africa sought to identify the specific traits or characteristics that embody law firm culture and which of those traits matter the most to lawyers.

As the market has slowed and returned to more of a pre-pandemic pace, retention of top talent has become the priority, especially as firms continue to evaluate post-pandemic policies.

The 2023 Lateral Partner Satisfaction Survey is the fifth edition of our survey, which offers a wealth of interesting insights as to partners’ motivations for moving and their satisfaction with their career choices.

For the fifth year in a row, MLA has partnered with the Association of Corporate Counsel to bring you the Law Department Management Benchmarking Report. The 2024 report is an ideal tool for departments seeking information on the appropriate levels of legal department staffing and structure, spend, work allocation, law firm and ALSP usage, technology, and diversity metrics based on responses from nearly 421 legal departments in 32 countries.

As the legal profession continues to navigate the changing landscape brought about by the global pandemic, Major, Lindsey & Africa sought to explore how Gen-Z views their professional lives and future legal self on a global scale. In Gen-Z: Now Influencing Today’s Law Firm Culture, we asked law students and new law firm lawyers questions around law firm culture, professional development and career expectations.

To better understand these shifting workplace dynamics, Major, Lindsey & Africa and Above the Law have partnered since 2017 on a series of biannual surveys. Between January and March 2023, we surveyed the Above the Law audience to learn about the priorities and perspectives of millennial lawyers as well as the generational differences that may exist between this group and its older counterparts.
